Matt Flynn : That was then, this is now in recruiting

If the LSU Tigers are able to win a BCS Championship, quarterback Matt Flynn will be a major reason why.

That was then: Matt Flynn was a 6-foot-2, 216 pound four pro style quarterback from Tyler, Texas (Tyler Lee High) back in 2003. The measureables, especially considering his position, were impressive.

He reportedly ran the 40 in 4.53 seconds, benched 250 pounds, squatted 390 pounds, and possessed a vertical leap of 33 inches. This plus some stellar play compelled Rivals to consider him the 16th best pro style quarterback in the nation.

In the end, Flynn chose the LSU Tigers over the Purdue Boilermakers, Texas A&M Aggies, Texas Tech Red Raiders, Alabama Crimson Tide, Arizona Wildcats, Baylor Bears, and Colorado Buffaloes.

The interesting thing is that Flynn probably never dreamed that he wouldn’t start a game for the Tigers until the year 2007. But at least it’s been going well for him. Particularly on October 20, 2007.

This is now: LSU head coach Les Miles is a gambler; that much everyone knows. Along with this, he could’ve played it safe as the seconds ticked down against the Auburn Tigers. But that’s simply not his style.

Then again, when you have a quarterback like Matt Flynn, a man that has been fighting through injuries the entire year while still playing well, it’s a little easier to turn into a riverboat gambler.

Thus, when Matt Flynn dropped back and delivered the winning 22 yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Byrd with only one second left on the clock in their October 20, 2007 contest, it was hard to be surprised.

After all, the day had been all about Flynn to the tune of 319 yards passing and three touchdowns.

But with that pass and 30-24 victory over Auburn, LSU reestablished itself as a viable national championship and SEC contender. And Flynn probably started thanking the powers above that he decided to stick it out for so many years in Baton Rouge.

Then again, the LSU fans probably thanked that same fella, don’t you think?

Speaking of the ramifications of that win, check out the BCS standings and my blogger friend Allison’s thoughts on LSU and more here.
