2007 five star recruits: The Illinois Fighting Illini
Say what you will about Illinois head coach Ron Zook, but don’t call him a poor recruiter. Once again Zook has worked wonders with a team that has no business attracting 5 star recruits.
That said, if this kind of recruiting performance continues the Fighting Illini won’t need a Zook quality pitch to bring great players into the fold.
Anyway, in the spirit of NCAA Recruiting Scoop’s desire to rundown all of the nations’ 2007 five star recruits, here comes the pair that decided on Illinois.
Arrelious Benn (6-foot-1, 210 pound WR from Washington D.C.): This Dunbar High graduate is fast (4.45 in the 40) and strong for a receiver (19 reps on the bench). Here’s the most important part, though.
Benn was productive over the past two seasons in high school, pulling in 105 balls for 2,169 yards. Thus, it’s no wonder that he ended up fifth on Rivals 2007 list of wide receivers.
Martez Wilson (6-foot-4, 230 pound DE from Chicago, Illinois): How do you like your weakside defensive ends? How about with 4.58 speed and the ability to run the shuttle in only 4.37?
If you like that kind of thing, apparently Ron Zook agrees with you because he was able to lure this Simeon High graduate to Illinois (second ranked at his position in the nation).
Oh yeah, Wilson was able to post 240 tackles as a senior. That’s right, it’s not a misprint: We’re talking 240.
Expect Martez Wilson to be a star for the club.
